Nolan Hoffman celebrated his birthday in the best possible way by winning the Emperors Palace Classic road cycle title for the first time in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, today.

The BCX sprinter, who turned 32 today, said he had received the perfect present after several years of trying to nail down the title in the 98km feature race.

He came home in a time of 2:09:02 to see off Genasys Technologies’ Ryan Harris (2:09:02) and Cycling Box’s Tyler Day (2:09:03) in the gallop to the line.

Hoffman, who won the elimination and madison titles at the SA National Track Championships earlier this month, said the special occasion had give him extra motivation and he praised his team for their support in the fast-paced race.

Dual track champion Steven van Heerden will be aiming to translate his recent success into a triumph on the road when he competes in the Emperors Palace Classic feature race in Johannesburg next Sunday.

The 23-year-old BCX pro attracted plenty of attention this month when he was crowned points champion at both the African Continental Championships in Durban and national champs in Cape Town.

With the road race taking place in his stamping ground of Kempton Park, Van Heerden is keen to use local knowledge and his track form to steal a march on his rivals in the 98km showdown.

The second leg of the ProTouch Cycling Club National Criterium Series, which is held in conjunction with the Emperors Palace Road Classic on Sunday, April 10, will mark a return to the famous old circuit featuring the Chariots Statue.

The support of Emperors Palace has allowed organisers to reinstate the traditional route that enables spectators to witness the thrills of criterium racing at close quarters, said Wynand de Villiers of ASG Events.

Team RoadCover’s Bradley Potgieter underlined his sprinting prowess when he surged to victory in the 98km Emperors Palace Classic road race in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Potgieter, who stepped into the role after the team’s first-choice sprinter and Cape Town Cycle Tour champion Clint Hendricks fell ill in the build-up to the race, outsprinted Team Telkom’s Reynard Butler and Nolan Hoffman in the dash to the finish.

With entries now open and high numbers of cyclists expected to roll out from the Kempton Park casino resort, the organisers have opted to put safety first and exclude some high-traffic sections on Rondebult Road.
